Workforce Diversity Essays - Social Inequality, Affirmative Action
Workforce Diversity Indtroduction Work environment assorted variety is an overall idea that keeps on advancing as more businesses move into the worldwide market. 6 Words and Phrases to Banish from Your Vocabulary
6 Words and Phrases to Banish from Your Vocabulary It was my mother who first outlawed certain words from my vocabulary. The ones I remember are âbut,â âhave toâ and âshould.â Later in life, I took some courses that added âtryâ and âcanâtâ to the list (Yoda would approve). Most recently, âjustâ joined the ranks of words to avoid. I may have been in the minority ten years ago as someone with hyper-awareness of how certain small words affect our messaging. But more recently, Iâve encountered more people who pay attention to the implications that subtle turns of phrase have on our meaning. Letâs take a look at the impact of each of these wordsâ"and at alternative ways to express ourselves. 1. But (Say âandâ or âwhileâ instead!) If you start paying attention to how often you use the word âbut,â you might be surprised. Often the word is completely unnecessary and what you really mean is âandâ! For instance, one of my writers wrote the following: I wanted to make sure that the clientâs profile was succinct but clearly revealed his differentiating qualities. I notice that people frequently default to âbutâ in situations like this, where they want to say something was âshort but sweetâ or something along those lines. Why say âbutâ? Who says that being short implies ânot sweetâ? Who says that a profileâs being âsuccinctâ implies that it doesnât reveal a clientâs differentiating qualities? Instead, how about this: I wanted to make sure that the clientâs profile was succinct while clearly revealing his differentiating qualities. In this second sentence, the challenge of creating a profile that includes the clientâs differentiating qualities is laid out in a positive light and does not imply a succinct profile could not reveal those qualities. Itâs a subtle difference, and a significant one. I was pleased to discover that a Stanford University professor, Bernard Roth, has taken up the cause to substitute âbutâ with âand.â See A Stanford professor says eliminating 2 phrases from you vocabulary can make you more successful. As he explains, When you use the word but, you create a conflict (and sometimes a reason) for yourself that does not really exist. ⦠whereas when you use the word and, your brain gets to consider how it can deal with both parts of the sentence.â Take the following sentence: I want to go to the movies, but I have to study. vs this one: I want to go to the movies, and I have studying to do. Changing âbutâ to âandâ trains the brain to come up with win-win solutions, rather than creating a state of victimhood. 2. Have to (Say âgoing toâ or âwant toâ instead) The movie vs. studying example above highlights another phrase that does not serve us: âHave to.â Professor Roth suggests substituting âwant to.â I like substituting âgoing to.â Letâs take a look at the sentence above again, with the word âandâ substituted for âbutâ: I want to go to the movies, and I have to study. (This still sounds fairly catastrophic.) What about these options: I want to go to the movies, and nevertheless I am going to study. (Suddenly this person has choice in the matter!) It would probably be pushing it to say âI want to go to the movies, and I want to study.â That might not be completely honest. But itâs a sentiment to try on. 3. Try (There is no âtryâ) Thereâs a difference between trying something as an experiment (see my above suggestion to try something on or try something out) and saying youâll try to do something when what you really mean is you donât think youâll succeed. Trying is lying. Trying is not doing. I can try all I want to write a blog article every Sunday. That doesnât get me to writing a blog article every week. It gets me going out with friends on Sunday nights while Im busy âtryingââ"and while my blog remains blank. We use the âtryâ word when we want to weasel out of things, whether they are commitments to ourselves or others. Saying youâll âtryâ is pretending to say âyesâ when you mean âprobably not.â Stop it. Instead, choose the actions you are willing to take. Say âI will do x, y and z.â Or say you arenât going to do it. There is no âtry.â 4. Should (Donât âshouldâ on yourself or on others) âShouldâ is a close relative to âhave to.â Itâs a moral judgment that often leads to a whole lot of trying. Do you think you âshouldâ go to the doctor? âShouldâ go to the gym? âShouldâ apologize to someone you love? Or do you think someone in your life âshouldâ do something and are you telling them so? Howâs that working for you? Take this example: You should stop eating so much sugar, honey. Youâll make yourself sick! vs. I want you to eat less sugar, honey. Iâm so scared youâll get sick. (The âyouâ in this sentence could be yourself or someone else.) To me, the second version is much more vulnerable and scary to say. Itâs less judgmental. If Iâm saying it to myself, itâs actually sweet and caring. And although it could produce defensiveness, itâs less likely to do so than the version that takes a moral high ground and tries to control someoneâs behavior. Some of us âshouldâ on ourselves even more than we âshouldâ on others. Take a look at how youâre putting yourself down with that sentiment, and how you use âshouldâ to let yourself off the hook instead of committing to something. 5. Canât (I think I can!) This one is basic. âCanâtâ is a disempowering word that leads to a lot of inaction. Instead of âcanât,â be curious about how you can. Look for other options than the one or two you are considering. Get coaching. Read The Little Engine That Could for inspiration. Get creative! As a friend and I often say to each other, the only 100% reliable way to reach a goal is not to stop until you accomplish it! And if you choose a different goal along the way, thatâs okay too. 6. Just (I called to say âI love you.â) The word âjustâ diminishes what we say after it. Calling to say âI love youâ is a big deal right? Why make it smaller, as the famous song does, with âjustâ? I was unaware until about a year ago of how much I qualify my sentences with the word âjust.â Common usages could be âI just wanted you to know thatâ¦â or âI just feel likeâ¦â or âI just thoughtâ¦â If you start paying attention, you might be surprised at the frequency of the word âjustâ in your vocabulary. See what happens if you delete it. Your communications might become more truthful and riskier. You might start to claim your feelings, opinions and choices in a new way. Did you learn something from this article about your language? Did you try eliminating any of the recommended words? Are there more words that you recommend banishing from our vocabularies? Please share!

The Canadian banking system began as a nationwide system, which encompassed a miniscule number of banks with numerous branches and allowed for diversification on a larger level. In contrast, American banks were prohibited from nationwide branch banking and from diversifying their portfolios. Many Canadian and American observers have come to view the two systems as distinct and believe that stability is a valid reason as to why the American system should adopt a nationwide banking system as well. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The Canadian And Us Banking System Finance Essay" essay for you Create order While the Canadian Banking system has proven to be economically stable, it is associated with high barriers to entry and a costly charter that holds an excessive amount of economic power. Regardless of their distinct government regulations and differing response to situations brought about by financial crises, there has been little attempt to compare both systems over a long period. This paper will examine the differences between the United States and the Canadian banking systems. In particular, it will discuss the forces, which spurned the creation of these economic entities; as well as evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of each system to stand firmly during periods of economic depression. Early banking in Canada suffered from the rippling effects of the Mississippi and South Seas Bubble, which convinced Canadians that paper currency was worthless and could not be trusted. As discussed in class, prior to 1763 paper money issued by the French government in Quebec was not valued; the fall of Quebec in 1759 pushed the situation over top. Staying true to their nature, British aristocrats and seigneurs in Quebec were intolerant of merchants and traders alike and were uninterested in finance or trade.Canada demonstrated little interest towards the idea of a central bank for the half of the 19th century following Confederation. Before Confederation, branch banks were established with little funds and very little skill than required for independent banks. Branch banks served the nations needs for more than a century and Chartered banks printed money required for circulation and met the needs of seasonal or unpredictable demand. The new Dominion Government was granted authority over banking, currency, interest and other related matters under the British North America Act of 1867. A comprehensive act was drafted to replace the expired bank charters of the four original provinces in 1871. The Minister of Finance John Rose, under the Macdonald government, desired a banking system that mirrored the American free banking system. Such a system would allow provinces to hold more power than the federal government, something Macdonald did not want. According to Joe Martin The political goal was financial stability, and the managerial challenge was to create the institutional and regulatory framework to carry it out. (Martin, 2011, p. 22) The first bank of United States - championed by Alexander Hamilton in 1791 in Philadelphia and was built on the view that in order to have a prosperous and powerful nation, an established banking system was necessary. The structure mirrored that of the bank of England and served as both a commercial and central bank. The establishment of the first bank was significant as it served as a model for the Canadian Banking System and mimicked each word and section of the from the banks charter. The constitution on 1787 failed to address whether banking was governed under federal or provincial legislation; this eventually became the deciding factor between the American and Canadian banking system. The constitution did address the right to issue and regulate silver and gold coinage to the Federal government but specifically prohibited the printing and circulation of paper money. The agrarian forces aligned against Hamilton were bankers in New York and Boston who were against the location of t he bank and were suspicious of the northeast elite. Thomas Jefferson was particularly against the notion of a bank and preferred that the United States refrain from navigation or commerce. (Martin, 2011, p. 27) Apart from incorporating the First bank of the U.S., the act also provided a route the government utilize to retain control of the state charted banks. When Jefferson and his supporters came into power, they refused to renew the bank charter in 1811, partly because the bank had accomplished so much. The Second bank of the United States was established in 1816, but was allowed to die after its twenty-year charter had expired. With the absence of a central bank, Americans failed to inject liquidity into the banking system and in turn, failed to combat the economic crisis of the early 1900s. At the time, J.P Morgan, one of the leading financiers of the Era, took on the role of the central bank and single-handedly rescued the nation. Jefferson and his supporters established the F ederal Reserve in 1913 after realizing that a country with such a large economy would not stand on its own without a central bank. According to author Charles Freedman, the Canadian financial system was constructed around five principal pillars: trust and loan companies, the co-operative credit movement, life insurance, securities dealers and chartered banks. (Freedman, 1998) These pillars were characterized by core business activities and government jurisdiction, under which they were incorporated and supervised. Additionally, different institutional types were traditionally separated by functionality, which increased penetration into each others primary focus of business. Trust and loan institutions tend to specialize in residential mortgages and term deposits, whereas Canadian life insurance companies were headed by the federal jurisdiction; meaning that they invested the proceeds of life-insurance in mortgage portfolios and financial assets, such as bonds and equities. (Freedman, 1998) On the other hand, Canadian securities dealers operated under the jurisdiction of provincial legislation. Incorporated and s upervised under federal legislation, Canadas chartered banks remained the dominant deposit taking institution with long involvement in commercial lending. Another major difference between the Canadian and U.S banking system encompasses the sunset clause. The sunset clause is clause that requires the Canadian government to conduct periodic assessments and updates of laws governing its banking system. This re-assessment done once every decade, builds on the present Act by improving the framework to ensure that the objectives of promoting competition more efficiently and effectively are met. (OECD Economic Surveys, 2010) The Sunset Clause gave birth to important legislative amendments in 1980, 1987, 1992, 1997, and 2002. (Allen and Engart, 2007) Consequently, this has led to the creation of more diversified and market oriented activities on the part of Canadian Banks, such as the entry of foreign banks into Canada. Initially, entry by foreign markets into Canada was limited by strict regulations. By allowing foreign banks into Canada, there would be a requirement to implement new regulations and procedures, which may be misaligned with Ca nadas system. This is a distinct phenomenon particularly because a safe and efficient financial system is important for the development and longer-run growth of the economy. (Allen and Engart, 2007) A third distinction in the Canadian banking system is the lack of interest rates on deposits. In Canadian banks, there was an absence of ceiling on interest rates and deposits as well as the elimination of ceiling rates on loans. Having established controls on interest rates, any financial deposits into the United States banking system escaped. As Canadian banks did not have such controls, any deposits made toward the Canadian financial system remained within the country. By the twenty first century, the amount of U.S debt financed outside the country outweighed the internal debt within the traditional financial system. Majority of financing which spawned from short-term deposits could easily turn tail and flee at the first sign of deteriorating investor confidence. (Doren, 2011) The United States has restrictions on the rates of interests that could be paid on deposits. According to Bordo, Rockoff and Reddish, although working to increase profit rates , U.S banks were made sensitive to the dangers of losing deposits when market rates rose which forced them to maintain more reserves. (Bordo, Redish Rokoff, 1994) The low risk of failure in Canada made it possible for the Canadian banks to hold smaller amounts of non-interest bearing assets and to precede to higher asset equity ratios. In addition, Canadian mortgages have fixed rates for a maximum of only five years thus eliminating the problems inherent in linking shorter-term deposits with long term loans. (Doren, 2011) In essence, interest rates paid on deposits were generally higher in Canada, interest income received on securities was slightly higher, interest rates charged on loans were similar and net rates of return to equity were higher in Canada than in the United States. (Bordo, Redish Rokoff, 1994) In contrast, the United States banking system has been fragmented for most of its history; directly pertaining to a Supreme Court case in 1839, which restricted the establishment of bank branches across America. This fragmentation did not support the needs of national corporations or industrialization and was instead reinforced by unregulated financial and commercial paper markets. There are numerous issues surrounding the United States and the limitations surrounding its nationwide banking arrangement. The first reason concerns the fragility of individual banks, in that their portfolios were too small and lacked diversity. This made it difficult to transfer funds across the country. As a result, the system would usually fail during difficult economic times when rural banks attempted to protect themselves by withdrawing funds from their correspondents, which would in turn discourage the crisis. Prior to World War I, the United States experiences major economic crises. These occurrenc es were essentially accredited to the usage of reserved holdings and heavy reliance on securities market to finance investments. (Bordo, Redish and Rokoff, 2008) In the nineteenth century, many communities in the United States became one-bank or few-bank towns because of branching restrictions and consequently, charged monopoly loan rates. (Bordo, Redish and Rokoff, 1994) This was a disadvantage to customers because of the higher costs association. On the other hand, the individual banks were benefiting large sums of money from its inefficient banking arrangement. The nation was in dire need for branch banking arrangements particularly in the interest of the consumers. Both the legislative and regulatory environment heavily influences the banking structure of Canada and the U.S. These characteristics play a part in determining the efficiency and stability of a banking system; in fact, from the 1920s to the 1980s many economists argue that Canadas banking system was more proficient in both stability and efficiency when compared to the United States. This belief was largely due to the prohibition of nationwide (interstate) branch banking in the U.S., which has destroyed the nations ability to successfully combat major issues without experiencing bank failures.Ãâà Tailored to nationwide service Canadian banks proceeded to establish an oligopolistic financial system with limited entry. Because of this, Canadian broker-dealer and securities market systems were limited in expansion, as banks possessed the financials capable of sustaining industrial development. Although many economists refer to the mid-1800s as a period of free banking in the U.S, this is somewhat of a misnomer, as the reference was less literal and more towards several banking systems founded on free banking regulations. Banks were prohibited from establishing branch networks and had to either purchase or yield eligible securities from banking authorities in order to secure notes. The depreciation of securities, including authorized government bonds were deemed the source of bank failures during this period. This restriction on nationwide branch banking gave way to discounted bank notes at fluctuating rates the further they travelled from their sources. In summary, the defective banks and their supply of paper money proved the imminent danger of unauthorized and romantic ideas of regulation. Current regulation outlined by the McFadden Act of 1927, the Banking Act of 1933 and the Bank Holding Act of 1956 permits individual states to create its own policies regarding the allowance of outer state banks to operate within its borders. Prior to the 1907, as a contingency tool branch banking was used to minimize the occurrence of future economic downturns but lost to the establishment of a central bank. The 1907 post-panic debate involved three distinct parties: New York banks, Midwestern city banks and country banks; of these three groups, only the Midwestern banks were in favor of positive structural reform. (Horowitz Selgin, 1987) This group dominated the American Banking Association (ABA) and proposed deregulation through reform and interstate branch banking. The goal of New York banks was to maintain the status quo and aimed to accomplish this by preventing a transfer of power to midwestern banks. On the other hand, country banks were adamant on prohibiting any branch ban king scheme that would have them competing with the city banks; in turn they ironically aligned themselves with Wall Street which preened any reform actions proposed by the ABA. Supporters of branch banking promoted economists and authors who believed that the panic of 1907 was preventable if interstate banking was allowed. Many highlighted the successful avoidance of crises in Canadian systems, where nationwide banking was encouraged. Thought regulations approved in 1913 favored Federal Reserve Banks, central banking was a compromise erected in response to the New York banks desire for continued hegemony. (Horowitz Selgin, 1987) This became evident when the depression of the 1930s unveiled the instability of the banking system. In 1933, during a nationwide commercial bank failure and the Great Depression Senator Carter Glass and Representative Henry SteagallÃâà championed the Glass- Steagall Act. (ValueClick Inc, 2003) This act divided and forestalled commercial and investment banking activities in order to prevent future economic crises. During this period, the stock market crashed due to improper banking activities carried out by commercial banks and their excessive involvement in the stock market. Commercial banks became greedy and took big risks by investing large amounts of capital into assets; buying new issues and reselling them to the public. Banks granted fallacious loans to companies with which they owned a stake and clients were encouraged to invest in those stocks. As a solution, a regulatory firewall was established, separating commercial and investment banks by controlling their activities. Banks had to make a choice between specializing in commercial or investment banking and only ten pe rcent of commercial banks total income could stem from securities. (ValueClick Inc, 2003) Directly targeted and forced to reduce their services, numerous financial giants such as J.P Morgan and Company, lost their main source of income. Over a period of extended prosperity in the early 1900s, a significant percentage of unit banks failed due to declining agriculture prices. Although Canada practiced branch banking and its financial structure for commercial banking mirrored that of the United States, the nation did not encounter significant bank failures. Glass eventually concluded that little banks were hazardous to stable banking and contributed to the condemnation of depositors. Glass also desired an integrated banking system supervised by the Federal Reserve and claimed that the dual system (shared by state and federal authorities) was an abomination to the nation. As part of Federal Reserve Act, all national banks were required to become members of the Federal Reserve System, wh ereas commercial banks had the option to join in or opt out. (Wessel, 2009, p. 97) This was to minimize the competing views of regulators governing the affiliated and unaffiliated banks. In addition, the Act was delayed until Glass adjusted the legislation to prohibit nationwide branch banking within states that encourage this. Proposals made by larger banks were considered attempts to sabotage the state banking system that provided financial services to small towns. This resulted from the anxiety to preserve the dual banking system between the state and federal authorities. Unfortunately, these small towns accounted for ninety percent of failures in the U.S and deposit insurance arose as a hasty alternative to branch banking, which would ensure the safety of the banking system. (Wessel, 2009, p. 50) Deposit insurance was not a new concept and had been around since the panic in 1907; however, in each case problems quickly arose following its introduction to several states. First, by asking banks to deposit their assets into a fund, an incentive problem emerged. Banks began to hold more risky portfolios because they held only a fraction of risks contributing to failures. Second, deposit insurance could contribute very little to save banks when the economy took a turn for the worst. Despite the negativity ass ociated with deposit insurance plans, unit banks claim that there is a possibility for effectiveness when handled properly. Now that we have highlighted several differences within each system and discussed the forces behind this historic establishment, we will now examine the efficiency and effectiveness of both systems to combat economic depression and inflation. As previously mentioned, the structures of both the United States and Canadian banking systems substantially differ. However, an efficient banking system is important in order to maintain long-term growth and productivity within the economy. The Canadian banking system has remained relative stabile throughout history despite the concentration of the overall banking industry. In contrast, the relative fragmentation historically rooted in the United States banking industry, has led to a sharp decline of commercial banks by approximately forty five percent over the last eighty-five years. (Mayer, 2004, p. 57) However, the fact that the United States is more market concentrated than Canada, means that U.S banks do not heavily influence the nations f inancial industry. There are numerous opinions on both the economic and political reasons, some generally shared, about why the financial crisis occurred. Governments failed to properly regulate markets and minimize a financial meltdown. Many observers suggested that various government policies aided the emergence of the crisis and credits fours main factors to this: (1) accessibility of credit resulting from artificially low rates, (2) government policies favored housing and in turn prompted subprime risk-taking, (3) government regulations related to corporate policies in large financial institutions and (4) failure to supervise the economy. (Roberge, 2010) Like other countries, Canada was impacted on some level by the global financial crisis over the past few years. Thanks to the equilibrium of systems within the financial service sector and the nature of its policies, Canada managed to emerge in good shape. As mentioned earlier, Canada financial structure is divided into several jurisdictions. The Federal government is in charge of banks; securities and investment firms as well as trust companies are under provincial authority; insurance is governed by both jurisdictions. The late 1900s and onwards brought with it drastic change to the Canadian system. A system once operated according to pillars was dismantled in 1987, allowing banks to own firms in investment, insurance and trust. As a result, large five banks dominated across all pillars due to changed policies. Under federal jurisdiction, there was a simultaneous centralization of political, supervisory and regulatory authority within Canadian banks. (Roberge, 2010) The 1980s witne ssed the last bank failure in Canada and the system has remained stable ever since, thanks to the oligopolistic banking system in Canada. Canadas response to this crisis was threefold. First, both definitive and pragmatic measures were established to ease the credit crunch. The government purchased $125,000,000 worth of mortgage bonds to increase their lending capacity. Second, the Federal government amended the Bank Act of Canada, which provided banks more power to manage the financial crises. Regulating investment contracts with guaranteed rates and guarantying investors that no money would be lost on their assets, was also part of the effort. Third, the Canadian government seized the opportunity and established a national securities board. Canada remained under control whereas other countries, such as the U.S., required major bailouts. Canadas resilience to this event is largely attributed to the structure and workings of their policy network within the financial sector. This policy networks mode of operation in the financial sector has remained generally small and obstinate, despite the networks expansion. The Fina ncial Institutions Supervisory Committee (FISC) is compromised of all important government personnel and ensures that lines of communication that exist across sectors remain clear. The Canadian system has one potential weakness, the absence of a definite authoritative figure overlooking the stability of the financial services sector. The tenacity of the Canadas policy network becomes increasingly evident when compared to the United States. Because of such cohesiveness and stability Canadas only experience with controls occurred in the late 1970s as a response to relatively high inflation rates. Controls are any type of government policy, which influences the overall pricing and wage structure in the economy. These controls place extensive restrictions on the maximum rate of which wages and prices can increase during various periods. Two characteristics that distinguish price controls from other types of government controls are: (1) these policies are adopted for the sole purpose of controlling inflation, not to accomplish economic efficiency or equity; (2) they influence numerous economic sectors rather than focusing on primarily one market. The anti-inflation act created by the Federal government spelled out a three-year control system. (Wirick, 2012) Firms with 500 plus employees were restricted by wage guidelines; these guidelines also applied to federal as well as a majority of public-sector employees. Price restri ction and cost markups were restricted by controls placed on large corporations. Overall, the controls program helped to restrict high inflation and keep it below certain levels. The historic background of Wall Street has demonstrated the obscure relationship between the government and the financial markets in the U.S., particularly the relationship between Washington and Wall Street. With division among regulatory and supervisory authority, an opportunity to pit one regulator against another showed itself. Following the Wall Street Crash of October, 1929, the United States entered into, what is now called The Great Depression. This period was marked by a series of bank failures and high unemployment, reaching as high as 25% in 1932. (Woodward, 2000, p. 72) In response to this great economic crisis, the newly elected Roosevelt administration began The New Deal, a series of economic programs, reforms, and regulations enacted between 1933 and 1938. Some of these programs included the Social Security Act, the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, which provided millions of dollars in relief operations, and the Works Progress Administration, which made the fed eral government the single largest employer at the time. The bursting of the U.S. housing bubble in 2006 and current ongoing global recession has led to the worst financial crisis in the United States since The Great Depression. Under the Bush administration, the United States government issued a limited bailout of the housing market, giving out close to a trillion dollars in loans with over half going to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. (Wessel, 2009, p. 178) Moreover, the United States has experienced a recessionary period every twenty years

The Criminal Justice System Free Essays
Assignment 1 The Criminal Justice System April 26, 2010 According to the American Heritage Dictionary, the criminal justice system is a ââ¬Å"system of law enforcement, the bar, the judiciary, corrections, and probation that is directly involved in the apprehension, prosecution, defense, sentencing, incarceration, and supervision of those suspected of or charged with a criminal offenseâ⬠(Mifflin, 2007). The criminal justice system aims to reduce crime by bringing more offences to justice and rise public confidence that the system is fair and will deliver for the law of abiding citizens. The criminal justice system consists of three areas (1) law enforcement (police), (2) adjudication (courts), and (3) correction (jail, prisons, probation, and parole). We will write a custom essay sample on The Criminal Justice System or any similar topic only for you Order Now These agencies operate together in the criminal justice system under the rule of law and as the principal means of maintaining the rule of law within society. However, in the three areas, the police solve crimes and make arrests, the court sentences the offender and the correction system carry out the punishment and rehabilitate the offenders. The criminal justice system primary goals are justice for individual, personal liberty, dignity of human beings, and the right to due process. Justice for the individual requires that all should have what belongs to them, and so the just man will render to the society, or State, of which he is a member, what is due to it. Personal liberty means freedom from unlawful physical restraint or harm and freedom from arbitrary interference with oneââ¬â¢s privacy and lawful belongings. On the other hand, human dignity is an expression of moral concept that human beings should not be treated as objects. One implication of human dignity is that every human being should be acknowledged as a valuable member of the human community and as a unique expression of life. Last but not least, due process is the principle that the government must normally respect all of a personââ¬â¢s legal rights instead of just some or most of those legal rights when the government deprives a person of life, liberty, or property. The due process clause in the Fourteenth Amendment protects against state of local government abuse of power. In conclusion, a criminal justice system that is honest, fair and effective is one of Americaââ¬â¢s most important institutions. All law abiding citizens are govern by due process according to the criminal justice system. Therefore, it is very important for all citizens to follow the law according to the police statues, the court statues, and the correction systems statues because there is always improvement in this field. He should be given the decease punishment because that s the least you can make to him. I believe this with all my life and base for it with everything I can.

Hitler Essays (634 words) - Hitler Family, Adolf Hitler, Nazism
Hitler More than twelve million people were killed in concentration camps, six million were Jewish. All of these horrifying events were consequences of the evening, April 20, 1889, when the one man responsible for all of this was born. Adolf Hitler was born into a loving family of small farmers and craftsmen. He had one half-sister, Angela, and one half-brother, Alois, Jr. Hitler's mother loved him very much and anyone could tell, because she showered him with affection. In his early school years, Adolf was a truly good student. He even took singing lessons and sang in the choir at a Benedictine monastery. He found the church festivals fascinating. His enthusiasm for the church soon began to fade, though. As his teen years approached, he began to rebel against the church and the career plans that his father had made. These plans were for him to become a civil servant, just as he had been. Hitler loved art and wanted to become a painter. He refused to go by his father's plans. This was just one thing that him and his father did not get along about. There really wasn't much they did agree on. Sometimes Alois criticized and even struck his son. Although they didn't get along very well, Adolf was devastated at his father's death when he was a merely thirteen years old. He even cried when he saw his body laying in the casket. Hitler was devoted to his mother and loved her deeply. She was very kind to him and encouraged to be an artist, or whatever else he decided to be. He even thought of himself as his mother's darling, and he carried her picture with him everywhere he went. In 1905, Hitler visited the country where he would later become dictator. While he was there, as a pale and sickly looking teenager, he stuck everyone as a shy and reserved young man. After that, he spent a few months studying, drawing in Munich, Germany. In October of 1907, he moved to Vienna, planning to study art. He applied to the Academy of Fine Arts Academy, but got rejected. The next year, in December, his beloved mother, Klara passed away. Later that year, he applied again for the art academy, but got rejected again. In the month of October, 1914, World War One broke out and Hitler joined the Bovarian Army. Hitler felt he needed to defend Germany, his adopted country. On August 4, 1918, Hitler was awarded the Iron Cross, First Class for bravery. Then, on June28, 1919, Germany signed the Treaty of Versailles, ending WW1. Several years later , in 1942, Hitler and his army shattered many lives by capturing and killing the inferior races the slowest and most painful ways possible. The inferior races, according to him were all Jewish people, the terminally ill, the physically and mentally handicapped, and anyone not of German descent. Hitler was a horrible and sick man, who brought on tough times for all people. Many people agree that it was very hard to speak up and if you did, you would get killed. Hitler even had doctors testing to find the most painful and horrible deaths on people. Hitler had a great relationship with his mother, but he and his father argued most of time. His father even beat him on occasion. Hitler was a scrawny and sickly looking boy who only had only one friend. He had gotten rejected from art school twice. All of this made him feel that he had no purpose in the world. Doing these horrible things probably made him think that he was making people feel the same way he felt all of those years and for a small amount of time, made him feel better about himself. I think that the German people were willing to follow and believe Hitler, because they had been through some rough times and would believe anyone who said that they could give them jobs and raise their income. They also wanted to hear that they were the best and when he said this, he won many Germans over.

Describing Angela Carter Essays
Describing Angela Carter Essays Describing Angela Carter Essay Describing Angela Carter Essay Essay Topic: Beauty and the Beast and Other Tales Delicious, eccentric, opulent, cruel corrupt: all of these adjectives appear in the story The Bloody Chamber, which do you find helpful in describing Angela Carters style?Ã In the order of the above title the words valorously mean; appealing to the senses. Deviating from convention in bizarre manner, abundant and plentiful, causing pain without pity, morally deprived and lacking integrity. It would be fair to say that all the above words are helpful in describing Angela Carters style but in varying degrees. The very nature of the stories themselves are cruel ass indeed they were in their original form so it is not totally accurate to say this is her own style exactly. However, there are flashes of pure cruelty, non-essential to the plot. For instance in The Bloody Chamber the count bans his new wife from entering his den but adds cruelly There I can go you understand, to savour the rare pleasure of imagining myself wife less. It is cruel to say this to a new wife and subtly cruel also as we learn the secret of the chamber. In the same story we hear of the Marquis who used to hunt young girls to kill them who boasts of his conquest to the blacksmith, pulling out of a bag a head to show off A find specimen of the genus brunette, eh, Guillaume? It was the head of the blacksmiths wife. Both incidents are little titbits of pure cruelty. Opulent is probably not an adjective you would expect of these quite violent tales, but the sense of opulence is seems to add to the pathos of the stories. In The Bloody Chamber we are shown the Counts wealth I drew my furs about me broad stripes errene and sable. It illustrates that wealth is no protector from death and the dead animals around her neck although opulent could be seen to symbolise her own death. He also tells of his great portrait collection of Gangues, Poussins, Fragonares etc (all of victims incidentally) and he tells of his Kings of Sevres and queens ransom of himoques. The description of his wealth is most detailed and certainly opulent. Carter also uses opulence in a non-materialistic sense. In The Lady of the House of Love She uses opulence of nature. Too many roses, too many roses bloomed on enormous thickets and the flowers themselves were almost too luxuriant. Delicious ties in quite well with opulent as something enjoyable and appealing to the senses and as such features a lot in the story, The Bloody Chamber. Funeral lilies whose white sheaths are curled out of a flesh as thick yielding to the touch as vellum. It is a deliciously sensual description using the senses of touch. Later in the same story she appeals to the sense of taste giving a vivid description of a meal. An aromatic soup a cold bird, a cold souffl, cheese all temptingly delicious sounding. She continues to tempt the senses with a visual feast of the Russia they knew Black earth, blue forest white nights of cool summer, the fireworks of the northern lights. She brings smell into the range also, The thick, rich wild scent hangs all about us.. This leaves us with eccentric and corrupt. Throughout the whole book, there are flashes of eccentric behaviour. In the first story, the heroines mother, having previously despatched a man-eating tiger kills her daughters husband. In Mr Lyon we are treated to a King Charles spaniel taking the part of a manservant. Continuing into the Tigers Bride the maid is automation. In The werewolf a small child maims the wolf and calmly cleans her knife and walks on. This brings is finally to corrupt which in my opinion is the most appropriate of all the adjectives and the most widely used in the book. Not only does Angela Carter use corrupt passages, each and every tale is corrupt in some way of form. They are all stories based round moral depravity and lacking in integrity. The lady of the house of love embodies corruption. The them of the tale of a vampire killing for blood is a corruption of life itself and the story is full of further images. She is too beautiful she is unnatural her beauty is a symptom of her disorder, her soulessness she rises when the sun sets. Shortly after this she uses the word herself a blast of rich, faintly corrupt sweetness strong enough almost to fell him plush petals somehow obscene in their excess tightly budded cores outrageous in implications with this paragraph. Carter demonstrates that it is not only humanity that can be corrupt? She emphasises this with one feeding off the other. Tomorrow, her keeper will buy his bones under her roses. The food her roses feed on gives them their rich colour, their smoothing colour, that breathes lasciviously of forbidden pleasures. Man and nature corrupting each other. The story of The Bloody Chamber shows corruption at its best, indeed the count himself is a descendent of Catherine de Medici one of historys most corrupt, amoral characters. The twist to corruption in this tales is that the heroin as we perceive her to be is fallible enough to sense it in herself. I sensed in myself a potentially for corruption that took my breath away. The count catches his young innocent wife reading through his erotic books and taunts her with the words My little nun has found the prayer books has she?. He alludes to what must be the ultimate corruption that of a bride of Christ. He tells his bride that he has bought her with Coloured stones and the pelts of dead beasts. Who is the most corrupt? The giver or the taker? The final depravity he wishes to inflict upon her is baldly stating to her the form of her impending death decapitation he wants her to bathe and dress and be jewel herself for her execution, the behaviour of a totally corrupt individual.Ã Angela Carter sees the world as a corrupt place peopled by corrupters with nature lending more that a helping hand. The line that sums this up perfectly comes from the Company of Wolves She knew the worst wolves are hairy on the inside.

News Literacy Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
News Literacy - Research Paper Example Obviously, these distinct categories all set out with a different purpose, and if one is not careful, he or she will be caught in the Net of deception and fall prey to manipulative tactics that vie to gain oneââ¬â¢s allegiance or financial support. In order to demonstrate this modern-day dilemma, three apparent news articles will be examined to see if they pass the test as being news ? or drift into another neighborhood. The three stories ? one about an up-and-coming hypnotist weight-loss doctor, another about a new canned chicken product fighting food poisoning, and the last about a dog strangely contracting a horse disease ââ¬â all have the initial presentations of legitimate news stories, but once one digs deeper and measures them with the tools of a savvy journalist, only one comes out passing for authentic news. Because news today covers such a wide range of topics, it is often easy for some articles to blur the lines as to what information neighborhood one is actually in , but fortunately, the discerning reader can always fall back on a GPS system, if you will, to find out where one really is. Let us begin with an article titled ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re getting sleepyâ⬠¦ and thinnerâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ out of Toowoombaââ¬â¢s Style Magazine. ... After diligently trying to disarm readers from believing that she is trying to promote the hypnotist, Tony Kyprios, she spends the entire article lauding the advancement and success of the lap-band surgery procedure, while commending the innovatorââ¬â¢s heart to help others. This presentation immediately shoots up red flags for the cautious reader, and the story content, which only divulges the positive side of the procedure, makes one even more wary of the authorââ¬â¢s intent. The slant, or story angle, definitely pushes the reader into embracing the hypnotist as an ambitious and benevolent out-of-the-box thinker whose medical practice is worthy of the readersââ¬â¢ support. After all is said and done, one remains skeptical as to whether this piece was set out to merely inform the audience, as a genuine news story should. One reason is that it lacks verification, as there are no reported studies proving the procedureââ¬â¢s success ? only unverified percentages of supposed success rates from abroad. With regards to independence, one cannot draw any apparent ties between the magazine and the practitioner, but a skeptic may argue that Kyprios either had a friendly contact at the magazine, or gave it some incentive to publicize his efforts. In lieu of accountability, the journalist has the credentials of a credible member of the media, but because of the one-sided reporting on the hypnotist and procedure ââ¬â not mentioning any drawbacks, apprehensions, or failures ââ¬â the reporting has all the signs of being biased. When walking past the six different information neighborhoods, one would clearly bypass putting this story in the ââ¬Å"newsâ⬠locale, but rather the ââ¬Å"publicityâ⬠zone, as its intent is to enhance an image, rather than to inform; its client is a personality

Developing a Business Model - Essay Example The company should allocate at least 50 percent of future American capacity to small and medium-size cars, so that it can adapt to what is turning out to be a permanent transition to a smaller and more gas-efficient cars. The company should also develop and incorporate flexible body shops in all its American assembly plants to facilitate quick response to evolving consumer needs (Trompenaars and Coebergh, 2014:47). In addition, it should make its entire engine and transmission plants flexible and able to manufacture different combinations of engine and transmission series. Between 2009 and 2011 Ford announced 4 more plant closures as well as its intent to sell or close 4 ACH plants that were remaining. It is imperative for the company to aggressively align its manufacturing capacity to actual demand. Regarding suppliers, the firm should work very hard to boost its US based supply operations, which represent eighty percent of its North American acquisitions. The firm should implement several business practices with its suppliers, aimed at maximising collaboration, supporting data transparency and expanding the capacity of business with desired suppliers, while enhancing its business model to make it m ore sustainable (Schein, 2012:53). The company should also be able to lower the total number of its production suppliers who qualify for significant sourcing, with more reductions to take place in the future. The company should pay special attention to enhancing its women and minority suppliers ââ¬â which currently represent roughly $4 billion of its yearly $35 billion of acquisitions from American supplier bases. So far, consolidation initiatives have led to, and will lead to, more business for its chief suppliers which will maximise their financial strength. Determinants of health include includes mainly are the social and economic environment, physical environment, and the persons individual characteristics and behaviors. Mainly these things determines the peopleââ¬â¢s health. Environmental determinants which affects the health are safe water and clean air, healthy work places, safe house, communities and roads contribute the good health conditions to the people. When there is an inequalities arisen in all these factors contribute the ill effects on the peopleââ¬â¢s health. In community areas safety should be educated and implemented. In work places healthy environment should be placed otherwise there is a chance to get the inequalities of health. Health education and providing health services to the community peoples reduces the inequalities and shows the lessen effects on health. Efficient health services prevents and treat the diseases influences the health. Education plays a key role in the health. Due low education levels are effect the health. This the importance about the environmental inequalities of health. (Sirisha) Part-two Five external general environmental factors affecting the organization directly are as follow : The external environment factors are those which affect the organization ability to function from outside. Customers If the hospital is providing good, satisfactory services, treatment then there will be increase in number of the customers but if we are providing expensive treatment for them ultimately the number will decrease. Government If the government is imposing high taxes on medicines, services, packaging, shipment of medicines, product development ultimately there will be increase in cost of the treatment which leads to decrease in the number of patients. Economy Likewise with most of the components of your doctors facilitys outer surroundings, your clinic must be proficient at observing the economy and figuring out how to respond to it, instead of attempting to control it. Financial variables influence how you give administrations, medications and the amount of cash you force on specific treatment, offices, and the sort of target you will pursue. Competition Your rival has a critical impact on how you work together and how you address your target market. You can decide to discover markets that the opposition is not dynamic in, or you can choose to tackle the opposition straightforwardly in the same target market. The achievement and disappointment of your different rivals likewise decides a part of your showcasing arranging, too. For instance, if a long-term rival in a specific market all of a sudden chooses to drop out because of monetary misfortunes, then you will need to modify your wanting to exploit the circumstance. All organization follows a corporate culture but it vary from one organization to other. For example, the culture of a large profit organization is totally different than that of a hospital .Our hospital culture is totally depend on patient. Understanding security has turned into a real need to policymakers, medicinal services suppliers and administrators. Affecting a solid patient security society is crucial for advancing this idea among human services experts and managing this idea in health awareness associations. Making patient wellbeing culture a top need is dependent on having a solid and positive patient security society. A few segments of a solid patient wellbeing society incorporate open correspondence, collaboration, and recognized shared reliance. Surveying a health awareness associations patient wellbeing society is the first venture for adding to a solid and strong security society. Mirroring that, numerous worldwide accreditation associations now oblige tolerant security society evaluations to assess the view of health awareness staff on issues, for example, cooperation, moves made by administration and initiative to bolster and advance patient wellbeing, staffing issues, recurrence of episode reporting, an d other patient security society issues. Such appraisals permit human services associations to get an unmistakable perspective of territories obliging consideration regarding reinforce their patient wellbeing culture and distinguish particular difficulties identifying with patient security inside healing facility units. An enormous piece of the answer is society. You can hand guardians an agenda or strengthen the significance of hand-washing, yet unless the work environment is willing to grasp the progressions needed to viably and reliably utilize it, the exertion will probably fizzle. It is the point at which you begin taking a gander at patient wellbeing through the viewpoint of society that you acknowledge how genuinely difficult this work is. We at the Center for Innovation comprehend and have perceived how working environment demeanor encompassing wellbeing can have a significant effect on results of consideration. Security related demeanor, when measured with a legitimate, dependable device, can foresee such clinical results as clinic gained contaminations and bedsores, and additionally operational results including attendant turnover. Society doesnt change overnight, yet it does react to viable intercessions, and we at the Center for Innovation are talented at utilizing instruments both to gauge society and to enhance it. Other culture that fit in our organization Quality care Mostly the hospital are known by the care given by them to the clients. The clients are believing in the management of hospital and they are depending the hospital to cure their disease. It is the responsibility of hospital and staff that assure quality of care to the clients who depend on them. When a hospital provide better care for the patients , the patients are getting cured and there is a chance to get preference for the hospital through that the hospital can increase their economy. Patient satisfaction Hospital leaders increasingly recognize the connection between their cultures and patient satisfaction, some medical specialists and nurses have to make a strong emotional involvement with patients and better treatment and care will create satisfaction on patients and they put some belief on them. So the health professionals should be in the path of patient centric. (Jefin) External environment Factors are as follow: Rise of sophisticated consumers: the clients and suppliers utilize bargaining position for organizationââ¬â¢s price, quality and efficiency. Nowadays patient can get information easily from internet. Accrediting bodies: like Phil health, HMOââ¬â¢s and International Accreditation like Joint Commission International play a big role in public accountability which ultimately increases competition in health care delivery. Challenging evolution in healthcare delivery: change in the boundaries like surgeries done in outpatient settings, homecare, health and internet, satellite clinics and laboratories in the mall. Technological Changes: IT and Molecular biology are utilized to improve the laboratory diagnosis and reduce the cost of treatment. Research and Development: New tools and knowledge are generated which are helpful for healthcare consumers. Government policy changes and regulatory influences External Communications: The way the hospital staff member or doctors behave with the patients, treatment, services affect directly. If the services, treatment is good more customer will be there which increase the profit. Infrastructure: If the hospital is at good location with good services there will be more interaction with the peoples and will have good profits. (SURAJ) POWER Power makes the world better .Power plays a vital role in the organization to get a better outcome .It develops our career and future .Normally power depending on the person and how the power is used by him ., Power has some pros and corns while in the using..Of course if we have more power we need to handle carefully. Everyone has a power. It will help us to make a right decision and solve the problem which is normally we are facing in the day to day life.. The five types of social power are following. LEGITIMATE POWER. This is the positional power and that is given to a person based up on their position in the organization. It is given by the authority of the organization We can not afford this power simply ,by getting this power we need to increase our personal power like referent and expert power .Legitimate power is the formal authority to control and use the resources available in the organization. COERCIVE POWER In this power the employees will obey the leader in order to avoid punishments., because they believe that they are under controlled by the leader. EXPERT POWER Expert power is influences getting from as a result of expertise. Or any special skill , or knowledge from a person .For example ,when we have the more complicated work ,we normally dependent on experts to finish our goals, as a result of their special knowledge or a skill on particular task. REWARD POWER In reward power the employees will comply the leader, because it produces positive benefits for them and this power encourage the employees to meet their work goals. REFERENT POWER In this power the employees will act accordance with leader because the employees admires or agree the with the leader who has desirable resources or personal skills .For example, if the employee respect the leader ,and like him all the way. So the leader can exercise power over the employee ,because the employee need to please him. I would like to select the legitimate power from the five source of power available in the organization why because of, the professionalism . in that the employees know who is the leader in my hospital and I can tell employees as a leader how they can reach the goals .Also I have the authority to control employees and the power to use the organizational tools based on my position in the hospital. With my legitimate power, I can make a two main principal strategies to control the outbreak of influenza, such as therapeutic counter measures and public health interventions .In hospital according to the availability of the stock I can ordered to the staff to give some vaccines and antiviral medications to the patients who is suffering from influenza and look after their health by providing some preventive measures to protect them from the infection. And another strategies for the public is infection control , and some social separation to prevent the spreading of the infection and also offer some anti-viral treatments for who is suffering with infections. As a leader should identify essential functions and assign responsibilities for the staff and re assign staff to support the urgent functions as needed during the time of epidemic .Ensure the list of expert staff to perform critical functions is regularly updated before the epidemic outbreak. THE GOOD AND BAD POLITICAL ASPECTS IN AN ORGANIZATION. There are many definitions for the organizational politics butIthinkit is all about organizational power; how we can get it and; how we use it to influence the employees while implementing our own agenda. There are some good and bad political aspects affecting our organization. The positive side of the organizational politics such as organizational flexibility, promotion of multiple perspectives, meritocracy, change of the facilities and implementation of the decision. While in use of politics we can improve the speed of influence and flexibility of our organization. Politics can help to sort out the issues in the organization. Politics can be used for improving the changes that is blocked by the normal influences and also it will help to implement the new decision. Whereas the negative political aspects affecting our organization are Inequality, discrimination and unfairness, distorted decision making, ignore interest of stake holders, inefficiency and time wasting and unequal power distribution. Political activity in our organization tends to form a groups and out groups and there is a chance to ignore the interest of the minor group. Due to political influences the decision strateg y can be lessened. Some individuals or groups can play or show their maximum power in the organization due to politics while others stake holderââ¬â¢s power are ignored. Power corrupts once tasted there is a chance to repeat. The use of political behavior create a taste of power and some times which can lead to a one direction. Bad politics is always spend more time in extensive lobbying and making a relationships which is not necessary for the organization. Training the Female Athlete
In this Podcast, Peter Melanson interviews Diane Vives ââ¬â director of Vives Training Systems in Austin, Texas, on training female athletes. Peter asks Diane a series of questions in regards to female athletes versus male athletes on how to train better, the differences between training, and the types of injuries caused from the training between men and women athletes. Diane answers with questions with research and studies that supports her theories and reasoningââ¬â¢s to her ways of training the female athlete.Diane explains that as trainers and coaches that we need to recognize with men and female athletes that we are seeing specific trends with female athletes that we need to do a better job at recognizing. The evidence is that the females are lacking certain performance activities and more importantly that there are a tremendous amount of injuries in female athletes. The research is back this up and it also shows that as coaches and trainers ââ¬â there are no improvem ents to these cases. The amount of females are dropping out of sports and fitness all together because of the drastic injuries being caused to these female athletes such as ACL and knee injuries. Peter asked Diane, what are some of the specific things that affect the females the most? Diane reported that incidents of 4 to 6 times greater ACL and knee injuries with females versus male and some times the number increases up to 8-10 times greater when looking at non contact ACL injuries. She included, that we need ways to reduce this number because injuries such as ACL and knee injuries are drastic. She also included that another difference between male and female athletes are the lack of upper body strength in females. As coaches and trainers, they are afraid to train upper body for females because they are afraid that the females will bulky, which research and studies show that this is a myth. Diane emphasizes that this is extremely important. When we train female athletes, the intensi ty lacks because we do not have a higher expectations than we do have for male athletes. We have to approach the female and really create a higher expectation for training intensity, Diane explains. Research study show that when you put a female and male athlete together and make everything relatively the same with body, mass size ââ¬â the size of the athlete, and you ask the female athlete what they perceived their level of intensity is. The females consistently felt like they were training at a much higher intensity than the males did. Peter asks Diane what are some examples for coaches and trainers to change to make a positive impact on their female athletes right away.Diane explained that in order to make a dramatic change right away, one of the best way is to incorporate a dynamic warm up that includes flexibility, basic strength training and teaching plyometric. Diane includes the work ââ¬Å"teachingââ¬â¢ because it is important that the athletes understand how to land and decelerate in order to reduce any injuries and to have progression.Including basic coordinative bimotor skills that include speed agility and quickness drillsà is also important into incorporating into the female athletes training to dramatically make a change and even reducing the ACL and knee injuries by 73%. In summary, Diane explains that coaches and trainers need to look at the female athlete differently versus being afraid of getting bulky and to have higher expectations. Incorporating dynamic warm ups can significantly decrease the amount of injuries drastically in the female athlete. Itââ¬â¢s important to focus both on the male and female athletes and to increase the expectations of the female athletes now versus in the past.

Backus-Naur Form
The Backus-Naur Form, which is also called the BNF, the Backus Normal Form and or the Backus-Naur formalism, is a notation used in the description of a part of syntax of ââ¬Å"sentencesâ⬠of a language. In about 1959, the Backus-Naur Form was suggested by John Backus, a constituent or part of the thirteen members which comprise the Algol 60 committee. Moreover, John Backus, besides from being a constituent of IBM, is also a major figure responsible for FORTRAN.The Backus-Naur Form, has been used since then to describe the syntax of Algol 60. The BNF along wit its extensions have become standard tools for describing the syntax of programming notations, and in many cases, parts of compliers are generated automatically from a BNF description (Gries, 1981). The specification of the Backus-Naur Form includes a set of derivation rules. This set of deviation rules are written as ââ¬Å" :: = . The in this formula is considered to be nonterminal. The sequences of symbols create the ent ire expression. Furthermore, sequences separated by a vertical bar ââ¬Å"|â⬠, may also consist the expression. The ââ¬Å"|â⬠sign is made use of in order to point out a definite choice. Expression which are not found on the left side, are considered to be terminals. In the present, Backus-Naur Form specifications are created in a form which it is easily read by humans and oftentimes, they are informal, including certain syntax rules and extensions (Bergin, 1996).Syntax rules and extensions state that optional items should be enclosed in square brackets, like in ââ¬Å"[]â⬠and that items which repeat or occur 0 or more times should be enclosed in curly brackets, such as in ââ¬Å" ::= { }. â⬠While, items which repeat or occur 1 or more times should be followed using a ââ¬Å"+. â⬠Syntax rules and extension also state that the non-terminals should be written or typed using plain text, instead of using italics and angle brackets. While the terminals appe ar in bold.Optional choices in a production should be separated through the use of the vertical bar symbol, like in ââ¬Å"| . â⬠If an item in the Backus-Naur Form is repeated, an asterisk ââ¬Å"*â⬠should be placed after the item and that simple parenthesis are used, by enclosing the item, to group the items (Chomsky, 1957). Participant Observation in a Sociological Experiment
Choice of setting and observations collected The widest interest for this participant observation was how subjects interacted in a situation where there was a limited resource without formal mediation for access. Personal experience at airports, for example, revealed that once boarding is announced, often many passengers voluntarily assemble, pick up and put down their luggage as they move step by step forward in a slow, extended line even though they all have pre-assigned seat numbers, while many passengers simply wait, seated, without all the effort entailed by joining the line, and then walk straight through the ticket entry. A similar process often happens boarding buses at the downtown central station, although with more incentive due to limited capacity and first-come, first served seat assignment. Therefore the research interest became how individuals negotiate bus boarding at the central downtown transit center, and if they interact with each other before and after boarding. The researcher would masquerade as a fellow traveler and attempt to categorize different behaviors. Howard Beckers 1958 advice is still relevant, and contrasts a seeming trend toward synthesizing templates often presented to undergraduates as the way to approach research in the humanities. The observer, possessing many provisional problems, concepts, and indicators, Becker pointed out more than 50 years ago, now wishes to know which of these are worth pursuing as major foci of hisShow MoreRelatedStanford Prison Experiment905 Words à |à 4 PagesThe Stanford Prison Experiment California State University, Long Beach The Stanford Prison Experiment The Stanford Prison Experiment is a very thought-provoking topic discussed in various classes.
